Detect more invasive and rare species, or
Get the most participants!

Prizes will be awarded to people with:

The largest number of observations of living things under water,
Greater number of invasive species reported
Record of rare or very remarkable data
Greater number of species reported
Random prizes among all participants who have uploaded data

During the month of November, an award ceremony will be held in Barcelona for the winners!

We will also present the results of the BioMARató: which species were found (including invasive and protected species) and which region was the winner.

If you sign up for one of the organized outings:

You don’t need any equipment beyond a smartphone or computer. On some trips we will provide you with a submersible camera to share between several people, on other trips you will have to bring your own.

On all snorkeling trips we will provide you with fins, goggles and wetsuit. On diving trips you will have to rent the equipment at a reduced price.

Consult the conditions of each activity for more information

Citizen science is the participation of citizens in research.

In the case of the BioMARató, volunteers contribute to research on the biodiversity of the Catalan coast and the data obtained are used by researchers from the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) and from around the world . Without the participation of volunteers, the scientific community would not have enough financial or human resources to be able to have so much data on the biodiversity of the coast.

The fish observations of the BioMARató in Barcelona will serve to increase the layer of fish in the Atlas of Biodiversity of Barcelona City Council.

XAVI helps you! At the BioMARató we have Xavi Salvador from the ICM-CSIC, an expert in marine biodiversity who will review all the observations and help you identify them!

You will also find him on the Instagram of the BioMARató solving your doubts!

The BioMARató is organized by a group of enthusiastic people and students of the sea from the EMBIMOS group of the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC), Anèl·lides Marine Environmental Services, FECDAS (Catalan Federation of Underwater Activities), Plankton diving and Checkers. In addition, it is part of the European research projects MINKE and ANERIS.

Biodiversity observations (living organisms) are recorded on the MINKA citizen science platform of the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) and contribute to UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goals.
